Curated by C\u00e9cile Godefroy, with Roberto Onta\u00f1\u00f3n as associate curator, it also features contributions from the world\u2019s leading experts in Iberian art.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The year\u2019s exhibition programme also includes the first major exhibition in Spain by Thomas Demand. Initially scheduled for 2020 and now reprogrammed for 2021, <em>Paper World<\/em> will show previously unseen photographs and films staged in a unique setting based on complex architectures and bespoke wallpaper.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The programme is rounded off with recently opened exhibitions \u2014 <em>Art and Architecture: A Dialogue<\/em> and <em>Outlooks on Art<\/em> \u2014 as well as the 26<sup>th<\/sup> iteration of <em>Itinerarios<\/em>, an inside view of the work being produced by a new generation of contemporary artists.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The centrepiece of Centro Bot\u00edn\u2019s exhibition programme for 2021 is the\nfirst major exhibition to explore the influence of Iberian art on Picasso\u2019s\nwork, showing, for the first time in Spain, masterpieces from the Louvre\u2019s\ncollection of Iberian art, one of the most important of its kind in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the exhibition <strong><em>Picasso Ibero<\/em><\/strong>, produced in collaboration with Mus\u00e9e national Picasso-Paris and scheduled to open at the beginning of May, Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn\u2019s art centre in Santander continues its ongoing focus on less well-known aspects of the work of the grandmasters of modern art, following its shows of the work of Joan Mir\u00f3 and Alexander Calder. Likewise, the show also seeks to popularize the art of the Iberian peoples among a much wider audience, thanks to the largest display of Iberian art ever brought together and putting it in relation with the work of Picasso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centro Bot\u00edn will also open \u201cPaper World\u201d, an exhibition by <strong>Thomas Demand<\/strong> that could not be held\nthis year due to the pandemic, providing continuity to its focus on the work of\ninternationally renowned artists while fostering their relationship with\nyounger artists though the foundation\u2019s visual arts workshops, which the German\nartist is scheduled to lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Benjamin Weil, artistic\ndirector of Centro Bot\u00edn, \u201cthis exhibition exemplifies Centro\nBot\u00edn\u2019s interest in offering the people of Santander and Cantabria a chance to contemplate\nworks by artists which, otherwise, could only be seen in big capital cities, thus\ncontributing to enriching the art scene nationwide\u201d. The exhibition by Thomas Demand will be the\nfirst major show by the artist in Spain, and with it Centro Bot\u00edn will continue\nto explore the conjunction between art and architecture, a central concern in\nDemand\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition programme\nfor 2021 is completed with the <strong>26<sup>th<\/sup>\nedition of <em>Itinerarios<\/em><\/strong>, presented\nto the public at the end of this year, as well as the recently opened exhibitions\nof the collection \u2014 <strong><em>Architecture into Art: A Dialogue <\/em><\/strong>and<strong><em> Outlooks on Art <\/em><\/strong>\u2014 and\nthe permanent exhibitions <strong><em>Portraits: Essence and Expression<\/em><\/strong> featuring\nworks generously on loan from Jaime Bot\u00edn, a board member of the Fundaci\u00f3n\nBot\u00edn, and <strong><em>Joan Mir\u00f3 Sculptures<\/em><\/strong>, a long-term loan by Successi\u00f3 Mir\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EXHIBITIONS AT CENTRO BOT\u00cdN IN\n2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PICASSO IBERO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1 May 2021 &#8211; 12 September 2021. Seen for the first time in Spain thanks to this exhibition, the show also features loans from the Picasso family, as well as works from the Museo Picasso de M\u00e1laga, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. The works of Iberian art also come from Spain\u2019s National Archaeology Museum as well as from museums in Ja\u00e9n, Albacete, Elche and Valencia, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mandate of <em>Picasso Ibero<\/em> is to examine the wealth of this fertile dialogue which ranges from the Iberian period, through the crucial developments that led Picasso from his pink period to <em>Les Demoiselles d&#8217;Avignon,<\/em> all the way to works that resonate, formally or conceptually, with the major themes of Iberian art, its characteristics and practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be the first time to bring together such a\nlarge number of archaeological artefacts with the purpose of tracing through\nthem the diversity of Iberian art, both through large stone sculptures as well\nas painted ceramic and bronze cultural objects. All these works will be presented\nin relation with Picasso, illustrating the many existing connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Produced in collaboration with Mus\u00e9e national Picasso-Paris, and with\nthe exceptional support of the artist\u2019s family, the exhibition also includes\nworks from public and private collections that, taken together, offer a thorough\noverview of works by the artist, from his youth until his final years. Room 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Curator: Udo Kittelmann, member of the Fundaci\u00f3n\nBot\u00edn\u2019s Visual Arts Advisory Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Demand is known for his large-format photographs of highly\nrealistic paper and cardboard models of interiors and landscapes. If at first\nglance the photographs seem to be of actual habitable spaces, as we come closer\nwe realise that these are artificially created scenes. His most striking works\nare those based on images taken from the media, often representing events\nloaded with political significance or topical relevance. With their suggestion\nof a possible human presence, the extreme realism of their artificiality and\ntheir provocative themes, Demand\u2019s works not only attract the viewer to an\nillusion but also highlight the role of photography in its creation and\ncultivation. Indeed, to further insist on this illusory condition, once the\nartist has photographed his paper and cardboard models, he destroys them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artist\u2019s first major exhibition in Spain, it comprises a selection\nof works in an original setting conceived specifically for this room through\ncomplex architectures and wallpaper made expressly by the artist to host photographs,\nmany never seen before, and films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OUTLOOKS ON ART<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13 November 2020. At once, presenting artworks whose\nunderlying concerns resonate with the exhibition on the second floor proves equally\nrewarding. In these first \u201coutlooks\u201d, the exhibition rooms focus on Painting \u2014an interesting opportunity to approach it from a different yet complementary\noutlook\u2014 as well as Series \u2014referring to how narrative unfolds in the display\nof contiguous images\u2014 and Art and Architecture \u2014 a space conceived on this\noccasion as a prolongation of the exhibition <em>Art and Architecture: A Dialogue<\/em> on the second floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ARCHITECTURE INTO ART: A DIALOGUE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10 October 2020 &#8211; 14 March 2021<\/strong><strong>. It surveys the relationship artists maintain\nwith the exhibition space and offers their reflections on how architecture also\nshapes human lives and structures social interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Architecture into Art: A Dialogue<\/em> includes a selection of\nworks by artists who have led a Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn Visual Arts Workshop and\nexhibited their works in Santander, along with pieces created by recipients of\nthe foundation\u2019s Visual Arts Grant. Room 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Curator: Benjamin Weil, artistic director of the Centro Bot\u00edn<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exhibition series showcases the production of a whole new generation\nof contemporary artists. <em>Itinerarios XXVI <\/em>brings together work by the 8 recipients of\nFundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn\u2019s 26<sup>th<\/sup> annual Visual Arts Grants: Olga Balema (Lviv, Ukraine, 1984), Eli\nCorti\u00f1as (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1976), June Crespo (Pamplona, 1982),\nMario Espliego (Guadalajara, 1983), Antonio Herv\u00e1s (Barcelona, 1981), Salom\u00e9 Lamas (Lisbon, Portugal, 1987), Anna Moreno (Sant Feliu de Llobregat,\nBarcelona, 1984) and Bruno Pacheco (Lisbon, Portugal, 1974).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taken as a whole, the artworks on\nview in this new edition of <em>Itinerarios<\/em>\nafford a compelling overview of the concerns and formal experimentation being\ncarried out by a new generation of artists, to whom Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn offers a\nunique opportunity to deploy their bold, new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PORTRAITS: ESSENCE AND EXPRESSION <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Permanent<\/strong> <strong>exhibition<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong><strong>Room\n1<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nset of eight major artworks from the personal collection of Jaime Bot\u00edn, patron\nof the Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn, are on permanent exhibition at the Centro Bot\u00edn in\nSantander. Chronologically, they span and condense almost the entire history of\ntwentieth-century painting, from Half-length Figure, created by Isidre Nonell\nin 1907, through to Self-Portrait with Injured Eye, painted by Francis Bacon in\n1972. The other works on show in this room are Femme espagnole (1917) by Henri\nMatisse; Harlequin (1918) by Juan Gris; Beach at Valencia (1908) by Joaqu\u00edn\nSorolla; Woman in Red (1931) by Daniel V\u00e1zquez D\u00edaz; The Constructor of Masks\n(1944) by Jos\u00e9 Guti\u00e9rrez Solana, and Portrait of My Mother (1942) by Pancho\nCoss\u00edo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JOAN MIR\u00d3 SCULPTURES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Permanent\nexhibition.
