{"id":46025,"date":"2021-10-08T10:40:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T08:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centrobotin.org\/?p=46025"},"modified":"2021-10-08T17:32:59","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T15:32:59","slug":"thomas-demand-creates-simulated-landscapes-for-major-exhibition-at-spains-leading-contemporary-art-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centrobotin.org\/en\/thomas-demand-creates-simulated-landscapes-for-major-exhibition-at-spains-leading-contemporary-art-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"THOMAS DEMAND CREATES SIMULATED LANDSCAPES FOR MAJOR EXHIBITION AT SPAIN\u2019S LEADING CONTEMPORARY ART CENTRE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Centro Bot\u00edn in Santander, Spain\u2019s leading contemporary art centre, will present a major exhibition \u2018Mundo De Papel\u2019 by the internationally renowned German artist Thomas Demand, running from <strong><u>9 October 2021 \u2013 6 March 2022.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition, specially staged for the spacious galleries of Centro Bot\u00edn, is the product of a long association between Thomas Demand and curator, Udo Kittelmann, a member of the Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn&#8217;s Arts Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this exhibition Demand has designed an entire simulated urban landscape, composed of eight pavilions surrounded by wallpaper installations. Each pavilion hangs from the ceiling and serves as a display for his photographs and video works dating from 1996 to the most recent from 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subjects include Whitney Houston\u2019s last meal at the Beverly Hilton Hotel; the control room at Fukushima\u2019s nuclear power plant; the recent Diamond Princess cruise ship stuck in quarantine; a pond with waterlilies like an impressionist painting; a red bow glowing in the sun or discarded plastic cups stuck on a mesh fence. Each scene is reconstructed with paper and cardboard using intricate folding and cutting techniques. After the model is built, he photographs them and discards the objects he created leaving only a visual narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accompanying the exhibition will be a unique pop-up book including an essay by Nobel Prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa and with three dimensional representations of the pavilions, produced by Thomas Demand in collaboration with London based publishers MackBooks. He will also lead a special workshop in Santander during the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes to Editors:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Centro Bot\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed by Pritzker Prize Winner architect Renzo Piano, Centro Bot\u00edn was inaugurated in the summer of 2017, as the new home of Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn\u2019s visual arts and public programs. Since its opening, Centro Bot\u00edn has presented numerous monographic&nbsp;and special&nbsp;exhibitions including:&nbsp;a major exhibition exploring Picasso\u2019s relationship with ancient Iberian art; a new project by Anri Sala; an exhibition of Alexander Calder curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and designed by Renzo Piano; a series of installations and performance works by Martin Creed;&nbsp;an exhibition of works by Cristina Iglesias; an exhaustive survey of sculptures by Joan Mir\u00f3 (co-curated by Joan Punyet in collaboration with Sucesi\u00f3 Mir\u00f3); a survey of paintings and drawings by Julie Mehretu (co-produced with Museu Serralves, Porto); a rare display of Francisco de Goya\u2019s drawings (in collaboration with Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid); and a new project by Carsten H\u00f6ller curated by Udo Kittelmann and Vicente Todol\u00ed.&nbsp;Initiated about three decades ago, the visual arts program of Fundaci\u00f3n Bot\u00edn is dedicated to: supporting young artists by way of grants and exhibitions, as well as workshops with more established peers; exhibiting works by key artists of our times; and showcasing lesser-known aspects of the works of twentieth-century masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thomas Demand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in 1964 in Munich, lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demand grew up in Munich and, from 1987 to 1992, attended both the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the D\u00fcsseldorf Art Academy before receiving a master\u2019s degree in fine arts from Goldsmiths&#8217; College in 1994 in London. He initially focused on sculpture, using photography to document his paper and cardboard reconstructions. Around 1990, however, photography and sculpture traded places in his artistic process; the photograph became the artwork. His interest in architecture and models let to various collaborations with architects such as Caruso St.John, David Chipperfield, Rem Koolhaas and SANAA either in relation to the architects practice, questions of installation or for actual architectural projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demand has shown his work at major museums and galleries worldwide. His solo exhibitions include shows at Garage Moscow, Moscow (2021), M Museum, Leuven (2020), Fondazione Prada, Venice (2017), Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (2016), DHC Art Center, Montr\u00e9al (2013), National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2012), the Museum of Modern Art, MOT Tokyo (2012), Kaldor Public Arts Project #25, Sydney (2012), Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2010), Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2009), MUMOK, Vienna (2009), the Fondazione Prada, Venice (2007), Serpentine Gallery, London (2006), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2004) and a survey at the Fondation Cartier in Paris (2001).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He represented Germany at the 26th Sao Paulo Biennale (2004). His work has also been shown in four editions of the Venice Architecture Biennale and was recently featured at the 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennale. His most recent project was the widely acclaimed exhibition \u201cThe Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied.\u201d, with Alexander Kluge and Anna Viebrock at Fondazione Prada, Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has curated exhibitions including \u2018local talent\u2019 at Spr\u00fcth Magers, Berlin (2020), \u2018L\u2019Image Vol\u00e9e\u2019 at the Fondazione Prada, Milan (2016), \u2018Model Studies\u2019 at the Graham Foundation, Chicago (2013), &#8216;La carte d&#8217;apr\u00e8s nature&#8217; at the Nouveau Mus\u00e9e National de Monaco (2010) and a contribution to the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale &#8216;Common Ground&#8217; (2012). His work is represented in numerous museums and collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Guggenheim Museum, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Tate Modern, London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Udo Kittelmann<\/strong>&nbsp;has been an independent curator and member of the Bot\u00edn Foundation\u2019s Visual Arts Advisory Commission since 2011. From 1994 to 2001 he was director of the K\u00f6lnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, and from 2002 to 2008 was director of the Museum&nbsp;f\u00fcr Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt. From 2008 to 2020 he was in charge of the Nationalgalerie, which brings together the National Museums of Berlin, responsible for the Alte Nationalgalerie, Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berggruen Museum, Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg and Friedrichswerdersche Kirche. In 2001 he was curator of the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, awarded the Golden Lion, and in 2013 curated the Russian Pavilion.
