Roni Horn, hija del dueño de una casa de empeños, se sintió intrigada desde la infancia por el oro y su pureza inerte. En 1982, tratando de tener «una experiencia más cercana del sol», creó en su estudio Gold Field (Campo de oro), soldando por compresión tiras de pan de oro para obtener una sola lámina, que describió como «mi primera experiencia del esplendor».
En 1992, el artista Félix González-Torres se topó con Gold Field en el Museum of Contemporary Art de Los Ángeles, en un momento en que su pareja, Ross Laycock, se estaba muriendo de SIDA.
Para ambos, Gold Field surgió como «un nuevo paisaje, un horizonte posible, un lugar de reposo y belleza absoluta», que les ofrecía un espacio de consuelo ante la dramática situación personal que estaban viviendo. Ese encuentro marcó el inicio de los intercambios creativos entre ambos artistas. En 1994, Horn retornó a Gold Field, esta vez emparejando dos láminas para crear Gold Mats, Paired-For Ross and Felix: «Dos, un número de compañerismo, de doble placer, un par, una pareja, uno encima del otro. Reflejando y emanando luz».

The daughter of a pawnshop owner, Horn was intrigued by gold and its pure, inert quality since childhood. In 1982, aiming to get ‘a closer experience to the sun’, she created Gold Field in her studio by compression welding strips of gold foil together into a single sheet, which she described as ‘my first experience of splendour’.
In 1992, the artist Félix González-Torres encountered Gold Field at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, at a time when his partner, Ross Laycock, was dying of AIDS. For the couple, Gold Field presented itself as ‘a new landscape, a posible horizon, a place of rest and absolute beauty’, offering them a space of solace from the personal, dramatic situation they were living. This encounter marked the starting point for the creative exchanges between both artists. In 1994, Horn revisited Gold Field, this time pairing two sheets to create—Gold Mats, Paired—For Ross And Felix: ‘Two, a number of companionship, of doubled pleasure, a pair, a couple, one on the top of the other. Mirroring and emanating light’.

Roni Horn, fille d’un prêteur sur gages, a été intriguée depuis son enfance par l’or et sa pureté inerte. En 1982, alors qu’elle cherchait à avoir «une expérience plus proche du soleil », elle a créé dans son atelier Gold Field (Champ doré), en soudant par compression des bandes de feuilles d’or pour obtener une seule feuille, ce qu’elle a décrit comme «sa première expérience de la splendeur».
En 1992, l’artiste Félix González-Torres est tombé sur Gold Field au musée d’art contemporain de Los Angeles, alors que son compagnon, Ross Laycock, était en train de mourir du sida. Pour eux deux, Gold Field est apparu comme «un nouveau paysage, un horizon possible, un lieu de repos et de beauté absolue», qui leur offrait un espace de réconfort face à la situation personnelle dramatique qu’ils vivaient. Cette rencontre a marqué le debut des échanges créatifs entre les deux artistes. En 1994, Horn a repris Gold Field, cette fois-ci en couplant deux plaques afin de créer Gold Mats, Paired – for Ross and Felix: «Deux, un nombre complice, de double plaisir, une paire, un couple, l’un au-dessus
de l’autre. Qui reflète et diffuse de la lumière».
