Carlos Bunga produced those early drawings during a residency in New York con la Beca de la Fundación Botín. They reflect the extraordinary impact the metropolis had on the artist, who keenly observed the city’s architectural diversity and sketched some details using ink on tracing paper – the materials architects used to work with before they switched to digital tools. Tracing paper also enabled him to superimpose fragments of various buildings that caught his attention and, hence, to create perspectives and depth, as if one would look into the window or see through the walls of an imaginary architectural composition. He has since been producing many more drawings of this kind.

These drawings also prefigure Bunga’s site-specific interventions in buildings, wherein he augments the existing architecture using painted cardboard, thus creating a perceptual shift in the appreciation of the space these works occupy.

Carlos Bunga

Oporto, Portugal, 1976

In his sculptures, paintings, drawings, performances, video and, above all, on-site installations feature often using everyday and commonplace materials such as cardboard packing and tape. Yet Bunga’s work involves a highly developed level of care and aesthetic delicacy, as well as a conceptual complexity arising from the interrelation between construction and destruction, between doing and redoing.
