Captives Buffoons and an Ensign Bearer is a series of large-scale sculptural canvases that re-elaborate the painting of the same title by Andrea Mantegna investing them with shifted sociopolitical implications.
The works connect Mantegna’s representations of captives of war and court entertainers with the architecture erected as a sign of victory by romans and subsequently fascists in Africa. The painting are created with various tones of shoe polish and are stretched over sculptural stretcher bars based on the architecture of Triumphant arches erected in Africa over a 3,000 year history of conquest.
