During the period in which the artist was a recipient of the Fundación Botín Art Grant, he travelled to Beirut, New York, Lisbon, and the Algarve to meet with artists, participate in conferences and gatherings, and take part in spiritual retreats. Circular Body is the result of that journey—an installation composed of two small photographs joined together, suspended from the ceiling and in constant rotation. On one side, we see a full-color image of the artist as a child. On the other, a black-and-white photograph of a man who has been brutally beaten, taken from a war album brought back by the artist’s father from Guinea-Bissau.
This work explores the circulation of war-related violence through images—across generations and cultures—and the possibility or impossibility of healing through representation.
