In his dual role as visual artist and architect, Navarro Baldeweg’s practice reflects on the ways humans occupy and shape territory. His ventures into the realm of visual arts have allowed him to pursue experimentation and research that, in turn, may feed back into his architectural work.
This series of paintings draws as much from art history as it does from the language of architecture. His rich and sensual palette reveals the influence of Matisse and Picasso, while the underlying structure of the work is more firmly rooted in formalism. The two compositions are almost identical, differing only in their colour schemes, making one appear like the photographic negative of the other. By rotating the canvas to rest on its corner, the artist shifts the perspective of the image, subtly adding a new dimension to the flat surface.
