Regina de Miguel creates complex narratives using drawing, sculpture, photography and film, in which she analyses the relationship between space (architecture, domestic interior, place of memory) and the personal, cultural or political identity of the people who inhabit it from different perspectives. Her method borrows from scientific research, as she meticulously observes and uncovers otherwise invisible aspects of culture.

In 2016, Regina de Miguel was given the opportunity to take part in a scientific expedition to Deception Island, a volcanic island located close to the Antarctic where the Spanish government keeps a research station.

Deception was named for its peculiar annular shape, only discovered once explorers managed to navigate through the narrow strait that give access to the submerged caldera, one of the safest anchoring places in the area. This, added to its strategic location, made it a coveted military site, but also one for trade, and later, scientific research. De Miguel films the eerie beauty of a completely desolate landscape in which extremes of hot and cold coexist, creating conditions that are unique on the globe.
