Works produced for the artist’s exhibition at the Spanish Pavilion in Venice, 2013, with the support of Fundación Botín.
Lara Almarcegui has developed an artistic practice grounded in the exploration of the material aspects of land and urban space. For approximately twenty-five years, she has worked in different cities identifying abandoned sites and examining the processes of contemporary transformation brought about by socio-political change. Almarcegui analyses the construction materials used in new buildings and the cyclical relationship between land and architecture. In 2013, she filled the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with the very materials required to construct it, thereby transforming it into a ruin.
