Besides the written word and images, numerous visual systems of representation are part of our everyday lives.

Erick Beltrán’s visual research lies in decrypting the way data visualization affects one’s interpretation of information. Beltrán’s use of data visualization tools to produce works of art thereby also questions the thin line separating these two linguistic structures, but also how the displacement of graphs and charts onto the wall of the gallery may affect one’s understanding of the content, thus exposing the subjectivity of any system of representation.

With Multiplicidad del mundo (Multiplicity of the World), Beltrán produces a self-reflexive device, which uses the vocabulary of data visualization to explain how it actually works. The location and the dimension of this graphic structure also calls for a reflection on its purely aesthetic quality, a factor that is rarely taken into consideration when deciphering a map, a chart or a graph in a printed document.
