Alice dos Reis is presenting the culmination of her work and research conducted during the grant period. Fascinated by how evolving projections of the otherworldly permeate the collective imagination, Alice explores the archetype of the UFO, particularly in Serra da Gardunha, a mountain in Portugal known for paranormal manifestations where her paternal family’s home is located. Once revered as a site of saintly apparitions, this mountain is now renowned for mysterious light sightings, with rumours of a UFO hangar hidden within it.
Our Lady Who Burns is an atmospheric and dream-like film that guides us through Serra da Gardunha and an intergenerational lore of infatuations. In parallel, two friends lament the pregnancy of their old cat, speculating on whether the mystical energy of the mountain might interrupt its gestation. Shot on 16mm with a small and intimate crew, this film is a voyage through the biographical landscape of the director, for whom the presence of the otherworldly, the geology of the territory, and the biography of unwanted bodily gestation are expressed through acts of cinematic apparitions.
