Conduits, molds, shells, or translucent skins are some of the gestures and forms through which artist June Crespo has developed a new body of sculptural work since 2020. In ST (Am I an Object), 2021, Crespo introduces new elements into her sculptural practice that stem from this recent formal exploration. In the piece, a polyester resin body— the shell of a lost polystyrene block— houses a second, hollow plaster form, which in turn contains fresh flowers. These new materials, emerging from the search for an intermediate state or transformation, shape the sculptural object from both the outside and the inside, and operate as a contrast between body, subject, and object.
Displaying a dense and robust material quality, movement, emptiness, and constant transformation are essential elements in the conception of this body of work. The sculpture, firm yet fluid, is articulated through channels, voids, and openings that suggest a sense of circulation and flow—through orifices, knots, ties, and anchors.
