Packing cardboard and tape are the signature materials Carlos Bunga used to create three dimensional paintings, sculpture and large-scale site-specific interventions. All refer to architecture, display and related protocols of viewing works of art. His constructions also seem to allude to the ephemeral constructions encountered in urban settings that provide shelter for transient people, therefore calling upon precariousness and fragility, as well as the contrast between permanent and temporary architecture, and the way it can or not adapt to changing conditions. One also thinks of the permanence of the exhibition space and the impermanence of the exhibition as two timeframes experienced in the same space. Straddling the divide between sculpture and painting, Bunga’s deceptively delicate works are characterized by an intense study of the combination of colour and materiality while, at the same time, they emphasize the performative aspect of the creative act.

Carlos Bunga

Oporto, Portugal, 1976

In his sculptures, paintings, drawings, performances, video and, above all, on-site installations feature often using everyday and commonplace materials such as cardboard packing and tape. Yet Bunga’s work involves a highly developed level of care and aesthetic delicacy, as well as a conceptual complexity arising from the interrelation between construction and destruction, between doing and redoing.
