Born in Poland, where he continues to live today, Miroslav Balka grew up in the shadow of the unspeakable horrors of the Nazi extermination camps of the early 1940s and the subsequent harsh reality of Soviet rule, which lasted until 1989. His work addresses personal and collective memory, especially in relation to the artist’s Catholic education and the shared experience of Poland’s fractured history.
Balka’s sculptures and installations show formal affinities with minimalist art, although his materials are inspired by his everyday environment—his home or studio—and the dimensions of his works reflect those of his own body or the spaces he inhabits (his height, the length of a wall, etc.). Measurements often serve as the titles of his sculptures, meaning that while his work may appear abstract, it is firmly anchored in reality.
