A native of Poland, where he continues to live today, Miroslav Balka grew up under the shadow of the unspoken horrors carried out in Nazi extermination camps during the early 1940s and the ensuing harsh reality of Soviet domination that continued until 1989. His work deals with both personal and collective memory, especially as they relate to his Catholic upbringing and the shared experience of Poland’s fractured history. His sculptures and installations bear a formal resemblance with Minimal Art, yet his materials are inspired by his daily surroundings —his home or his studio— and the dimensions of his work refer to either his own body or the spaces he inhabits: for instance, his height, the length of a wall in his workspace and so on. Those measurements often serve as titles for his sculptures. So while it may seem abstract, his work is in fact very concretely anchored in reality.

Miroslaw Balka

Warsaw, Poland, 1958

Memory is the main material with which Balka works. His work is an attempt to reflect on the need to recover the values that modern society tends to overlook: the importance of historical memory, the criticism of intolerance, awareness of mortality, the appreciation of emotions and feelings.
