Platform, 2016

The opposite of double may be division. While the notion of double is key in Carsten Höller’s work, a series of works explores the notion of division. Division Wall, installed for the first time in 2010, posited the notion of a mathematical model to paint a wall by splitting it in fragments that are each a half of the other. The structure of this floor piece is determined by the same principle. Each circular part is a half of the other. Each can be activated by the viewer, so as to potentially displace her or his trajectory within the exhibition, thus potentially breaking the order of the two paths.
