Gasworks Yaoi is an installation that culminates Francesc Ruiz’s research into the local area, carried out during his residency at Gasworks. Inspired by the former establishments of Vauxhall, the artist has created a semi-fictional narrative that emphasizes clichés surrounding sexuality and lifestyle in the neighbourhood.
Ruiz transforms the exhibition space into a bookshop specializing in yaoi comics. Originating in Japan, this genre depicts homoerotic male narratives. However, unlike gay erotica aimed at men, yaoi comics are produced and consumed primarily by women. The yaoi comics featured in Ruiz’s Gasworks bookshop are supposedly created by amateur female illustrators who depict the encounters of a group of men whose nightlife revolves around Vauxhall’s extensive gay bar and club scene.
Through humour and the distortion inherent in comics, Ruiz takes creative license to explore a specific subculture and how it fits within the broader fabric of the neighbourhood.
